After a workout – whether it’s weights or endurance cardio — post-workout nutrition is key. Go for quick-digesting carbs and about 20 grams of protein to replenish your energy stores and help with recovery. You want to consume this within an hour of your workout — preferably within 30 minutes. Finding convenient sources for this window of refueling can be challenging — after all, we’re not all going to throw a slab of salmon into our gym bags.

For those of us who don’t want chocolate milk, with all the sugar and uncultured dairy — there is hope. I ran across this little gem in my local Natural Grocers and decided to give it a try.

coco libre protein
The product met my standards — grass-fed whey, fair trade coconut water and 20 grams of protein. Whey protein is most quickly assimilated into your system to provide your muscles with immediate nutrition. It also contains high amounts of branched-chain amino acids, or BCAAs, which are critical for muscle recovery and repair. It’s sweetened with stevia, so it reports just 6 grams of sugar on the label.  Only 160 calories and a taste that’s good enough — in a protein/coconut water sort of way. It’s easy to throw into your gym bag and sip on the way home — or to work — or, as there’s only 92 days until Ironman Boulder, to your next workout.
